Five minutes to boot, a spinning wheel every time you open a browser tab, a fan that roars while you check email: an old laptop can test anyone's patience. Before you shop for a new one, it is worth knowing that many slow laptops are held back by one or two parts that can be upgraded. If you want to speed up an old laptop, an SSD upgrade is usually the single biggest improvement you can make, and extra RAM often helps too.
Why old laptops feel so slow
Most of the sluggishness people notice comes from three things:
- A mechanical hard drive (HDD). Older laptops often have a spinning hard drive. Every time you start the computer, open a program or load a file, it has to physically seek data. Modern software assumes much faster storage.
- Not enough memory (RAM). When RAM fills up, the system starts using the drive as overflow memory. On a hard drive, that makes everything crawl.
- Heat and dust. A clogged fan makes the processor slow itself down to stay cool. If your laptop is hot and loud, read our guide on laptop overheating and fan noise.
SSD upgrade: the biggest bang for your buck
A solid-state drive (SSD) has no moving parts. Replacing an old hard drive with an SSD typically makes a laptop boot much faster, open programs in a fraction of the time and feel far more responsive in everyday use. It is the upgrade that most often makes people say "it feels like a new computer."
A few things to know:
- Check the drive type. On Windows, open Task Manager, go to the Performance tab and look at the disk; it will usually say HDD or SSD. If you already have an SSD, a new one may not make a big difference.
- Know your connector. Older laptops usually take a 2.5-inch SATA drive. Newer ones use M.2 slots, which may support SATA or the faster NVMe standard. A technician will match the right drive to your model.
- Moving your data. Your system, programs and files can usually be cloned from the old drive to the new SSD, so you do not have to start from scratch. Even so, back up first; our backup guide explains how.
RAM upgrade: when it helps
More memory helps if you tend to keep many browser tabs open, work with large spreadsheets or photos, or run several apps at once. A good sign you need more RAM is that the laptop slows down as you open more things, even after an SSD upgrade.
To check on Windows, open Task Manager while you work normally. If memory use regularly sits near the top, more RAM will likely help. Many laptops have one or two memory slots that accept standard modules, so adding or replacing a stick is often straightforward.
Which laptops can be upgraded?
This is the important catch. Many modern ultrathin laptops have memory and storage soldered directly to the motherboard, and all recent MacBooks use built-in storage and memory that cannot be swapped. On these machines, the amount you bought with is what you have.
Older laptops, many business laptops and plenty of gaming laptops still use removable drives and memory. Some older MacBook models also have upgradeable storage. If you are not sure about yours, a technician can check the model and tell you what is possible before any work begins.
Also consider the rest of the machine. If the battery barely lasts, the hinges are loose or the screen is failing, those repairs can be done at the same time. If the processor is very old, an upgrade may still help but will not make it a modern machine; we will tell you honestly if a laptop is worth the investment.
Free ways to speed up an old laptop first
- Restart the laptop regularly instead of always using sleep.
- Uninstall programs you no longer use and turn off unnecessary startup apps.
- Install pending system updates.
- Free up storage space; drives that are almost full slow down.
