The Most Common MacBook Problems We Repair in Ottawa

From cracked screens and tired batteries to coffee spills and dead keyboards: the MacBook problems we see most, and what to do about each one.

MacBooks are built to last, and many people use theirs for school, work and everything in between for years. After more than a decade of MacBook repair in Ottawa, we've noticed that the same handful of problems comes up again and again. Here's what they are, what you can check yourself, and what a repair involves.

1. Cracked or damaged screens

MacBook screens crack when the lid is closed on something small (earbuds, a pen, a crumb), when the laptop is dropped, or when it gets crushed in a bag. Symptoms include cracks, lines, black or coloured patches, or a backlight that works while the image doesn't.

On modern MacBooks, the glass and display are one part, so repairs usually mean replacing the display panel or the full display assembly. Before you book, connect the MacBook to an external monitor. If the external screen works, your data and logic board are likely fine and the problem is the display.

2. Worn-out batteries

MacBook batteries are consumables. As they age, you'll notice shorter battery life, unexpected shutdowns or a laptop that only works while plugged in. macOS shows battery health in System Settings > Battery; if it says service is recommended, a replacement is due.

Watch for a swollen battery: a trackpad that's hard to click, a bottom case that's bulging, or a laptop that rocks on the table. Stop charging it, don't press on it, and have it checked promptly.

3. Liquid spills

Coffee, tea, water and wine spills are some of the most urgent repairs we see. If it happens:

  1. Unplug the charger and shut the MacBook down immediately.
  2. Turn it upside down in a tent shape to let liquid drain.
  3. Don't turn it back on to test it, don't use a hair dryer, and skip the rice.
  4. Get it professionally cleaned as soon as possible.

Our guide to laptop liquid spills covers the first 10 minutes in detail. Keep in mind that repairs on liquid-damaged devices carry no warranty, because corrosion can continue to develop.

4. Keyboard and trackpad problems

Sticky, repeating or dead keys are common, especially after crumbs or spills. Some older MacBook models with very thin keyboards are particularly sensitive to dust. Try these first:

  • Hold the MacBook at an angle and gently use compressed air.
  • Check keyboard settings and try an external keyboard to rule out software.
  • Restart, and update macOS.

If keys still fail, they may need repair or replacement. A trackpad that won't click can also be a sign of a swelling battery underneath, so don't ignore it.

5. Charging, power and board-level issues

A MacBook that won't charge or turn on isn't always dead. Check the adapter, cable and outlet, and try a different USB-C port on models with more than one. Our checklist for a laptop that won't turn on walks you through it.

If those check out, the cause may be a charging port, battery or a fault on the logic board. Many MacBook issues can be fixed at board level with micro soldering instead of replacing the entire board. On most newer MacBooks the storage is soldered to the logic board, so keeping regular Time Machine or iCloud backups is especially important.

Other MacBook repairs we handle

  • Overheating and loud fans, often from dust build-up.
  • Display flicker or a flex cable issue on some older models.
  • Speakers, cameras, hinges and USB-C ports.
  • Slow performance on older models that still support storage upgrades.
