Spilled Liquid on Your Laptop? What to Do in the First 10 Minutes

Coffee, water or wine on your keyboard? What you do in the next ten minutes matters more than anything else. Here is exactly what to do, and what to avoid.

A tipped mug, a toddler with a juice box, a window left open during a storm: liquid spills are one of the most common reasons a laptop ends up on a repair bench. The good news is that a laptop liquid spill is often recoverable if you act quickly and correctly. The bad news is that some of the most popular "fixes" make things worse. Here is what to do in the first ten minutes, and what to leave to a technician.

Minute one: cut the power

Liquid on its own rarely kills a laptop instantly. What does the damage is electricity flowing through liquid, which causes short circuits and speeds up corrosion. Your first job is to stop that current.

  1. Unplug the charger immediately, then any USB devices, drives or docks.
  2. Hold the power button until the laptop shuts off completely. Do not wait to save your work or shut down normally.
  3. If your laptop has a removable battery, take it out. Most modern laptops, including all recent MacBooks, have internal batteries, so skip this step rather than prying the case open.

Minutes two to five: drain and blot

Once the laptop is off, get as much liquid out as possible before it travels further inside.

  1. Open the lid as wide as it safely goes and turn the laptop upside down in a tent shape, keyboard facing down, so liquid can drain out instead of soaking into the logic board.
  2. Blot the keyboard, palm rest and any visible liquid with a lint-free cloth or paper towel. Blot; do not rub, which pushes liquid between the keys.
  3. Wipe the outside of the ports with a dry cloth. Do not push anything into them.
  4. Leave the laptop in its tent position somewhere with normal room air.

If the spill was something sugary or acidic, such as pop, juice, coffee with milk, wine or beer, take note. These leave sticky residue and corrode boards much faster than plain water, so getting a professional cleaning becomes even more important.

What not to do after a laptop liquid spill

A lot of well-meaning advice online does more harm than good:

  • Do not turn it back on to "check if it works." Powering on a wet board is exactly how a recoverable laptop turns into a dead one.
  • Do not put it in rice. Rice does not draw moisture out of a sealed laptop, it does nothing about corrosion, and the dust and starch can end up in ports and fans. It is a myth.
  • Do not use a hair dryer or heat gun. Heat can warp plastics, damage the battery and push moisture deeper. Never put a laptop in an oven or on a heater.
  • Do not plug in the charger to see if it charges. Wait until the laptop has been inspected.
  • Do not shake it hard. That spreads liquid across the board.

Why "it works now" does not mean it is fine

Many people let the laptop dry for a day, turn it on, and are relieved when it boots. Unfortunately, liquid damage is often a slow problem. Minerals and sugars left behind on the logic board keep corroding connections over the following days and weeks. That is why a laptop can work perfectly after a spill, then suddenly develop a dead keyboard, a flickering screen, charging problems or refuse to power on a month later.

The real fix is to open the laptop, inspect the board under magnification and clean away residue before it causes lasting damage. If corrosion has already damaged components, board-level repair can often replace the affected parts rather than the whole motherboard. Protect your data first

If the laptop still boots after it has been inspected, or you have cloud sync running, make sure your important files are safe before anything else happens. Our guide on how to back up your devices before a repair walks through the options. If the laptop will not turn on at all, tell your technician that data is your priority so they can plan the repair around it.

One honest note: liquid damage is unpredictable. A repair can bring a laptop back to life, but because corrosion may continue in places that were not visibly affected, repairs on liquid-damaged devices do not carry a warranty. A good shop will explain this before starting.

Quick answers

Should I put my wet laptop in rice?

No. Rice does not remove moisture from inside a laptop and does nothing to stop corrosion. Power it off, drain it upside down and have it cleaned professionally.

My laptop works after the spill. Do I still need a repair?

It is a good idea to have it inspected. Residue left on the logic board can keep corroding components and cause failures days or weeks later.

Is liquid damage repair covered by a warranty?

At Fix Revolution, repairs on liquid-damaged devices carry no warranty because corrosion can continue in areas that were not visibly affected. We explain this before starting.
