A laptop with a damaged display is frustrating because everything else may work perfectly. You can hear it boot, the keyboard lights up, but you cannot see a thing, or you are reading around a spiderweb of cracks. The good news is that laptop screen replacement is one of the most common and dependable laptop repairs. The key is figuring out whether the problem is actually the screen, or something else that only looks like a screen problem.
Three common screen problems and what they usually mean
Cracked or shattered screen
This is usually obvious: a drop, something left on the keyboard when the lid was closed, or pressure in a backpack. You may see cracks, black ink-like blots, or areas that no longer display anything. Physical damage to the panel cannot be repaired; the display panel needs to be replaced. On many laptops, only the LCD or LED panel is swapped. On others, including MacBooks and many thin ultrabooks, the glass and display are one sealed unit, and sometimes the entire lid assembly is replaced.
Vertical or horizontal lines
Lines can come from a damaged panel, a loose or worn display cable, or occasionally a graphics problem on the logic board. A simple clue: if the lines move, flicker or change when you open and close the lid, the cable or its connection is a likely suspect. If the lines stay put no matter what, the panel is more likely at fault.
Black screen
A black screen does not always mean the display is dead. It may be a backlight failure, a cable issue, a power problem, or the laptop not actually starting up. If the laptop shows no signs of life at all, see our guide on what to check when a laptop won't turn on.
Quick checks you can do before booking a repair
- Shine a flashlight at the screen. If you can faintly see the desktop or login screen, the panel is working but the backlight is not. That narrows down the repair.
- Connect an external monitor. Use the HDMI or USB-C port with a TV or monitor. If the image looks normal externally, the graphics are fine and the problem is in the display, its cable or its backlight.
- Adjust brightness. It sounds obvious, but a brightness setting turned all the way down looks a lot like a dead screen.
- Restart and update. A driver or system update can occasionally cause flicker or odd colours. If the issue appeared right after an update and also shows on an external monitor, it may be software.
- Watch the lid. Slowly open and close it. Problems that appear at certain angles point to the cable or hinge area.
What affects a laptop screen repair
We do not quote prices without seeing the model, because several factors change the job:
- Panel type: standard displays, high-refresh gaming panels, high-resolution and touchscreen displays all use different parts.
- Construction: some laptops let a technician remove a bezel and swap the panel; others require replacing a fused display assembly.
- Hidden damage: a drop that cracked the screen may also have stressed the hinges or display cable. Damaged hinges are worth fixing at the same time, since a stiff hinge can crack a new screen. Read more about why a broken laptop hinge should be fixed early.
- Parts availability: common models are usually easy to source; rare or very new ones can take longer.
Why not keep using a cracked screen?
You can use an external monitor as a temporary workaround, but a cracked panel tends to get worse. Cracks spread with temperature changes and lid movement, glass fragments can scratch the keyboard area, and on touchscreens, damage can cause phantom touches. If you rely on your laptop for work or school, it is usually best to fix it before it spreads.
Before any repair, back up your files. A screen replacement does not normally touch your data, but backing up is always the safe choice.

Quick answers
Can a cracked laptop screen be fixed without replacing it?
No. Cracked or physically damaged display panels have to be replaced. Depending on the model, that is either the panel alone or the full display assembly.
Why does my laptop screen have lines?
Lines usually come from a damaged panel or a loose or worn display cable. If they change when you move the lid, the cable is a likely cause.
Will I lose my files during a screen replacement?
A screen replacement does not normally affect your data, but we always recommend backing up before any repair.
