You press the power button and nothing happens. No lights, no fan, no startup sound. Or perhaps the lights come on but the screen stays black. When a laptop won't turn on, it is easy to assume the worst, but plenty of cases turn out to be a charger, a drained battery or a display problem rather than a dead computer. Work through these checks in order before booking a repair.
Step 1: Rule out the charger and outlet
- Try a different outlet. Plug something else into the outlet to confirm it works, and skip power bars for the test.
- Inspect the charger. Look for frayed cables, bent tips or damage near the connector. Check that both parts of a two-piece charger are firmly connected.
- Look for a charging light. Many laptops and chargers have an indicator. No light at all suggests the charger or the charging port.
- Try another compatible charger if you have one, especially for USB-C laptops. Make sure it provides enough power for your model; a phone charger usually will not.
- Wait. If the battery was completely drained, leave it plugged in for at least 30 minutes before trying again.
Step 2: Is it off, or is the screen just black?
Listen and look closely. If you hear the fan, see keyboard backlighting, notice Caps Lock responding or see power lights, the laptop may actually be running with a display problem.
- Turn the brightness up using the keyboard shortcut.
- Connect an external monitor or TV. If an image appears there, the problem is in the display, cable or backlight. Our guide to laptop screen replacement explains the options.
- Shine a flashlight at the screen to see if a faint image is visible, which suggests a backlight issue.
Step 3: Do a power reset
Laptops can get stuck in a frozen or hibernation state that looks exactly like a dead machine.
- Unplug the charger and any accessories, including USB drives, docks and SD cards.
- Hold the power button for about 15 to 20 seconds, then release.
- Plug the charger back in and press the power button normally.
Some laptops also have a small reset pinhole on the bottom; check your manufacturer's support documentation for your exact model. On MacBooks, holding the power button for around 10 seconds forces a shutdown, after which you can try starting it again.
Step 4: Think about what happened recently
The history often explains the problem:
- A spill, even a small one, can cause a short circuit or corrosion that appears days later. Do not keep trying to power it on; follow our guide on what to do after a laptop liquid spill.
- A drop can disconnect internal cables or damage the board.
- Overheating before it died points to cooling problems or heat damage.
- An interrupted update can leave the laptop powering on but not loading the system.
Step 5: Watch for battery warning signs
If the case is bulging, the trackpad is pushed up, or the bottom panel no longer sits flat, the battery may be swollen. Stop using the laptop, unplug it, and do not press on, charge or puncture it. A swollen battery needs professional replacement.
When a laptop won't turn on: what a technician looks for
When the basic checks do not help, the cause is usually one of these: a failed charging port or charging circuit, a dead battery, a damaged power button or its cable, a short on the logic board, or a failed component on the board. Many board-level faults can be repaired by replacing the specific failed component rather than the whole motherboard, which is often far more economical and keeps your data in place. Our micro soldering service handles this kind of repair.
A diagnosis tells you exactly what is wrong before you decide. Diagnostics are free when you go ahead with the repair.

Quick answers
Why does my laptop have lights but no picture?
The laptop may be running with a display, cable or backlight problem. Connect an external monitor to check whether the computer itself is working.
Can a dead laptop be fixed without losing my data?
Often, yes. Many power faults are on the charging circuit or logic board and can be repaired without touching your storage, though backups are always recommended.
How much does a laptop diagnosis cost?
Diagnostics are free if you proceed with the repair. If you decide not to, or the laptop cannot be repaired, a $29 diagnostic, pick-up and delivery fee applies.
