iPad Stuck in Recovery Mode or on the Apple Logo: How to Fix It

Frozen on the Apple logo or showing a computer and cable? Step-by-step fixes for an iPad stuck in recovery mode, and when it's hardware.

You restart your iPad or install an update, and it never comes back. Instead, it sits on the Apple logo, restarts over and over, or shows a picture of a computer and a cable. An iPad stuck in recovery mode or on the Apple logo is frustrating, but it's often fixable without losing your data, as long as you take the steps in the right order.

Before you start: protect your data

The key choice in this process is between Update and Restore. Update tries to reinstall iPadOS while keeping your data. Restore erases everything. Always try Update first. If you have a recent iCloud or computer backup, you're in a much safer position, which is why we recommend regular backups for every device. Our guide on backing up before a repair shows you how.

Step 1: Force restart the iPad

A force restart doesn't erase anything and sometimes clears a stuck startup.

  • iPad without a Home button: press and quickly release volume up, press and quickly release volume down, then press and hold the top button until the Apple logo appears.
  • iPad with a Home button: press and hold the Home button and the top (or side) button together until the Apple logo appears.

If the iPad starts normally, back it up right away.

Step 2: Update through a computer

If the iPad is still stuck, use a computer:

  1. Connect the iPad to a Mac or Windows PC with a good cable.
  2. On a Mac, open Finder. On Windows, open the Apple Devices app or iTunes.
  3. With the iPad connected, do the force restart steps above, but keep holding the top button (or Home and top buttons) past the Apple logo until you see the recovery mode screen with a computer and cable.
  4. On your computer, choose Update when prompted.
  5. Wait. The computer downloads the software, which can take a while. If it takes too long, the iPad may exit recovery mode; simply repeat the steps.

Step 3: Restore as a last resort

If Update fails repeatedly, Restore erases the iPad and installs a clean copy of iPadOS. After that, you can set it up from your backup. Only choose this if you have a backup or are willing to lose the data on the device. You'll also need the Apple Account password the iPad was set up with, since Activation Lock remains on after a restore.

When it's a hardware problem

If the iPad gets stuck again after a successful restore, or the computer shows an error and can't complete the process, the cause is often hardware rather than software. Common culprits include:

  • A worn or failing battery that can't supply enough power during startup, causing restarts at the Apple logo.
  • A faulty charging port or cable that disconnects during the update.
  • Damage after a drop or liquid exposure, affecting a connector or a component on the board.
  • Logic board or storage faults, which require board-level diagnosis and micro soldering.

Try a different cable and a different USB port or computer before concluding it's hardware. If it still fails, a technician can test the battery, connectors and board. If the iPad holds irreplaceable photos and has no backup, tell us before anything is restored; our article on micro soldering explains how board repairs can sometimes bring a device back long enough to save data.

Quick answers

Will I lose my data if my iPad is stuck in recovery mode?

Not necessarily. Choose Update first, which tries to reinstall iPadOS while keeping your data. Restore erases the iPad.

Why does my iPad keep restarting on the Apple logo?

It can be a software problem, but a worn battery, damaged connector or board fault can also cause boot loops.

Can you recover data from an iPad that won't start?

Sometimes. Board-level repair can bring a device back long enough to save data, so tell us before anything is restored.
