iPads are built to last, and plenty of families still use one that's many years old for reading, streaming, school work and video calls. The part that wears out first is almost always the battery. If yours dies halfway through a movie, you might be wondering whether an iPad battery replacement in Ottawa is worth it or whether it's time for a new tablet.
Here's how to decide.
Signs your iPad battery is worn out
Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity with every charge cycle. After a few years of daily use, you'll typically notice:
- Battery life that's a fraction of what it used to be.
- The iPad shutting off at 20–30% or the percentage dropping suddenly.
- It only works while plugged in.
- It takes much longer to charge, or never reaches 100%.
- It feels warm during light use.
- The screen is lifting or bulging away from the frame. This is a swollen battery. Stop using and charging the iPad, don't press on the screen, and get it checked as soon as possible.
Rule out the easy stuff first
Before blaming the battery, make sure software and settings aren't the real cause:
- Check Settings > Battery to see which apps use the most power. Games, video and video calls are heavy users.
- Lower screen brightness. The large display uses a lot of power.
- Update iPadOS and your apps.
- Turn off Background App Refresh for apps that don't need it.
- Make sure you're using a proper wall adapter. If your iPad seems not to charge at all, see our checklist for an iPad not charging.
Our article on fast battery drain covers more settings that apply to iPads too.
What an iPad battery replacement involves
Unlike some devices, iPads don't have a battery door. The battery is glued inside, under the screen. To replace it, the technician has to:
- Carefully separate the display from the frame, which is held in with adhesive.
- Disconnect the display and battery cables.
- Release the battery's adhesive and remove it without bending or puncturing it.
- Install the new battery, reseal the display with fresh adhesive, and test everything.
This is delicate work. The display can crack during removal if it's done carelessly, which is why it's definitely not a DIY job. If your screen is already cracked, it can make sense to replace the screen and the battery at the same time.
So, is it worth it?
A battery replacement is usually a good choice when:
- The iPad still runs the apps you need and gets iPadOS updates.
- The screen, charging port and buttons work well.
- The only real complaint is battery life.
- You'd rather not pay for a new tablet, set it up and transfer everything.
It may not be worth it if the iPad no longer supports the apps you rely on, has several other problems, or is too slow for how you use it. In that case, we'll tell you honestly. You can also sell us the old iPad, even if it's broken, and put the money toward a replacement.
Making the new battery last
- Avoid leaving the iPad in a hot car or in direct sun.
- Don't let it sit at 0% for weeks; store it with some charge.
- Use a good-quality adapter and cable.
- Remove thick cases while charging if the iPad gets warm.
