You charged to 100% this morning and you're already hunting for an outlet by lunch. A phone battery draining fast is one of the most common complaints we hear, on both iPhone and Android. Sometimes the battery is genuinely worn out. Just as often, an app, a setting or a weak signal is quietly burning through your charge.
Here's how to tell the difference, and what to try before paying for a new battery.
Find out what's using your battery
Both iPhone and Android show which apps use the most power. On iPhone, go to Settings > Battery. On Android, open the battery section in Settings. Look for:
- An app you barely open that still uses a large share of the battery.
- High "background" activity from social media, navigation or streaming apps.
- A sudden change that started after you installed or updated something.
If one app stands out, update it, restrict its background activity, or delete and reinstall it. A misbehaving app can drain a perfectly healthy battery.
Settings that make a real difference
- Use Low Power Mode or Battery Saver. On iPhone it's Low Power Mode; on Android it's usually called Battery Saver or Power Saving. Both cut background activity and visual effects.
- Lower screen brightness and timeout. The display is usually the biggest power user. Auto-brightness and a 30-second to one-minute timeout help a lot.
- Limit background refresh. On iPhone, review Background App Refresh in Settings > General. On Android, restrict background usage for apps that don't need it.
- Review location access. Set apps to use location only while in use, not "always".
- Trim notifications. Every notification wakes the screen and the radio.
- Update your software. Updates often include battery and bug fixes.
- Restart once in a while. A reboot clears stuck processes that keep the phone awake.
Hidden causes: signal, cold and heat
When cell signal is weak, your phone boosts its radio power to stay connected. If you spend the day in a basement office or a building with poor coverage, you'll see faster drain. Using Wi-Fi where it's available helps.
Temperature matters too. Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity temporarily in the cold, which is why phones can shut off unexpectedly during an Ottawa winter even at 30%. Keep your phone in an inside pocket outdoors. Heat is worse in the long run: leaving a phone on a dashboard in summer or gaming while fast charging speeds up permanent wear. Signs your battery actually needs replacing
Batteries are consumables. After enough charge cycles, no setting will bring the lost capacity back. It's time for a new battery if:
- The phone shuts off at 10–30% or when you open the camera.
- The percentage jumps around, for example from 40% to 5%.
- The phone feels noticeably slower, especially on older iPhones.
- On iPhone, the Battery Health section under Settings > Battery shows low maximum capacity or a service message.
- The phone gets warm while doing very little.
- The screen or back is lifting. That's a swollen battery. Stop charging it, don't press on it, and get it replaced as soon as possible.

Is a battery replacement worth it?
For most phones that are otherwise in good shape, yes. A new battery restores all-day life and often brings back lost performance for a fraction of the cost of a new phone. It also keeps a working device in use longer, which is better for your wallet and the environment. If your phone is very old or no longer gets software updates, we'll tell you honestly whether the repair makes sense.

Quick answers
Does Low Power Mode or Battery Saver damage the battery?
No. It simply limits background activity and visual effects to save power, and it's safe to use as often as you like.
Why does my phone die in the cold even when it shows charge?
Cold temporarily reduces how much power a lithium-ion battery can deliver, so the phone can shut off early. Warming it up usually brings the charge back; a worn battery makes this much worse.
How long does a phone battery replacement take?
Most battery replacements are completed the same day, depending on parts availability.
