Your phone or laptop holds your photos, passwords, banking apps and work. Handing it to a stranger is a matter of trust. When you need to choose a repair shop in Ottawa, price is only one piece of the puzzle. This checklist covers the questions worth asking any shop, including us, before you hand over a device.
1. Is the quote clear, and is it free?
A good shop will give you a quote based on your exact model and problem, and explain what's included. Ask:
- Is the quote free?
- Is there a diagnostic fee, and when does it apply?
- Will you contact me before doing anything beyond the quoted repair?
At Fix Revolution, quotes are free. Diagnostics are free if you go ahead with the repair; if you don't proceed or the device can't be repaired, a $29 diagnostic, pick-up and delivery fee applies. Knowing these terms upfront avoids surprises.
2. What does the warranty actually cover?
"We offer a warranty" means little without details. Ask how long it lasts, whether it covers both parts and labour, and what's excluded. Most repair warranties don't cover new drops or liquid damage, and that's normal. What matters is that the terms are clear. Our article on repair warranties explained covers what to look for.
3. What quality of parts do they use?
Replacement parts, especially screens, come in different quality levels. A lower-grade screen might look fine on day one but have weaker brightness, colour or touch response. Ask what part they plan to use and whether there are options. If you have an iPhone, our guide to OEM vs aftermarket iPhone screens explains the differences.
4. Is the repair done in-house?
Some businesses collect devices and send them elsewhere for repair, which can add time and means more people handle your device. Ask whether the repair is done by their own technicians. At Fix Revolution, nothing is sent out.
5. How do they handle your data and privacy?
- Will they need your passcode, and why? Some tests (touch, Face ID, cameras) require access to the device after the repair.
- Do they recommend a backup before starting? A responsible shop always should.
- Do they offer board-level work or data recovery if the device won't turn on?
Whoever you choose, back up first. No shop can guarantee your data through every repair.
6. Can they handle more than one type of repair?
A shop that only replaces screens may not be able to help when the problem is a charging chip, a console HDMI port or a laptop that won't power on. Experience with micro soldering and board-level repair is a good sign that a shop can diagnose problems instead of just swapping parts until something works.
7. Is it convenient, and how do you pay?
Consider how much time the repair will cost you. Do you have to drive, park and wait? How long will you be without the device? Also ask when you pay. With us, you pay at the time of service, with no upfront payment, by cash, e-Transfer, debit or credit.
Red flags to watch for
- Vague quotes that change once the device is open, without a call to you.
- No written warranty terms.
- Pressure to pay the full amount before any work starts.
- Advice that sounds unsafe, like charging a swollen battery or "drying" a wet phone in rice.

Quick answers
What's the most important question to ask a repair shop?
Ask what the warranty covers and for how long. Clear warranty terms usually signal a shop that stands behind its work.
Should I always back up before a repair?
Yes. Repairs rarely affect your data, but no shop can guarantee it. A backup protects you whatever happens.
Does Fix Revolution send devices out for repair?
No. Repairs are done by our own technicians. We pick up your device, repair it and drop it back off.
