When you ask for an iPhone screen repair quote, you may hear terms like "original", "OEM", "refurbished", "incell" or "OLED". Two quotes for the same model can differ a lot, and the difference is often the part. Understanding OEM vs aftermarket iPhone screens helps you compare quotes fairly and choose the screen that fits how you use your phone.
The main screen quality tiers
Terminology varies between suppliers, but replacement iPhone screens generally fall into these groups:
Original (OEM) screens
These are displays made to the manufacturer's original specification. They offer the brightness, colour accuracy, touch response and power efficiency your iPhone was designed with. They are usually the most expensive option.
Refurbished original screens
An original display panel whose cracked top glass has been professionally replaced. When done well, the picture quality matches an original screen, because the display panel underneath is original. Quality depends heavily on the refurbisher.
Aftermarket OLED screens
Third-party OLED panels for models that originally use OLED. They can look quite good, but brightness, colour and touch quality vary between manufacturers. You may see them described as "soft" or "hard" OLED, which refers to how the panel is built; soft OLED versions are generally closer to the original.
Aftermarket LCD ("incell") screens
For iPhones that came with OLED, some low-cost replacements use an LCD panel instead. They are the cheapest option, but typically:
- Have lower contrast and less true blacks.
- Are thicker, with a slightly wider black border around the image.
- Can use more battery than an OLED panel.
- May have less precise touch response.
For iPhones that originally shipped with LCD screens, an LCD replacement is normal, but quality still varies.
Brightness, colour and battery life
The differences you will notice day to day:
- Brightness: lower-tier screens can be noticeably dimmer, which matters outdoors on a sunny day.
- Colour and blacks: OLED screens show deep blacks and vivid colour. LCD replacements on OLED models look greyer in dark scenes.
- Battery: a less efficient panel can shorten your battery life.
- Touch: poor touch controllers can cause lag or ghost touches. See iPhone ghost touch and unresponsive screens.
True Tone and screen messages
True Tone adjusts your display's colour temperature to match the light around you. After a screen replacement, True Tone may disappear from Control Centre unless the original screen's data is transferred to the new one. Many repair shops can do this transfer on supported models with a dedicated programmer, so ask whether it is included.
On recent iPhones, iOS may also display a message in Settings saying the display could not be verified as a genuine part. This is informational. It does not mean the screen was installed badly, but you should know about it in advance, especially if you plan to resell the phone.
Questions to ask your repair shop
- Which type of screen are you using: original, refurbished original, aftermarket OLED or LCD?
- Will True Tone work after the repair?
- Will iOS show a parts message, and what does it mean for my phone?
- What warranty covers the part and the labour?
- What happens if the screen develops a defect?

OEM vs aftermarket iPhone screen: which should you choose?
If you plan to keep your iPhone for years, use it outdoors a lot, or care about colour accuracy for photos, a higher-tier screen is usually worth it. If you are about to sell or replace the phone, a budget option may make sense. Either way, the choice should be yours and should be explained honestly.

Quick answers
Is an aftermarket iPhone screen bad?
Not necessarily. Quality varies widely. Good aftermarket OLED screens can look close to original, while low-cost LCD replacements are dimmer and use more battery.
Will True Tone work after a screen replacement?
It can on many models if the original screen's data is transferred to the new one. Ask your shop if this is included.
Why does my iPhone show a message about an unknown display part?
Recent iPhones show this message after some screen replacements. It is informational and does not by itself mean the repair was done badly.
