Your iPhone opens apps you did not tap, types random letters, zooms in by itself or calls someone from your contacts while it sits on the table. Or the opposite: parts of the screen simply ignore your finger. This is known as iPhone ghost touch, and while it can feel like the phone has a mind of its own, the cause is usually something specific you can track down.
What causes ghost touch?
Ghost touch happens when the touchscreen registers input that is not there, or fails to register input that is. The most common causes are:
- A dirty screen or a bad screen protector. Moisture, grease or a cracked or bubbled protector can confuse the touch layer.
- Cheap chargers or cables. Poor-quality chargers can create electrical noise that makes the touchscreen act erratically, but only while plugged in.
- Software glitches after an update or from a misbehaving app.
- Physical damage to the display, even a hairline crack you can barely see.
- Pressure on the screen from a bent frame, a tight case or a swollen battery pushing from behind.
- Low-quality replacement screens. Some aftermarket displays have less reliable touch controllers. If the problem started after a screen repair, this is a prime suspect.
- Liquid exposure affecting the display connector or board.
Fixes to try at home
- Clean the screen with a soft microfibre cloth. Make sure your hands are dry.
- Remove the screen protector and case. If ghost touch stops, the protector or case was the problem.
- Unplug the charger. If the issue only happens while charging, try a different, good-quality cable and adapter.
- Force restart the iPhone: on iPhone 8 and later, press and release Volume Up, press and release Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
- Update iOS in Settings > General > Software Update.
- Check Accessibility settings. Features under Settings > Accessibility > Touch, such as Touch Accommodations, change how touches are registered. Make sure nothing is turned on that you did not set up.
- Watch for a pattern. Does it happen in one spot? Only when the phone is warm? Only in one app? Note it, as it helps a technician diagnose faster.
As a last software step, some people try resetting all settings (Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings). It does not erase your photos or apps, but it does reset preferences like Wi-Fi passwords and wallpaper. Back up first.
Signs it is the screen or hardware
- Ghost touches always appear in the same area of the screen.
- A strip or corner of the screen never responds.
- The problem began after a drop, after liquid exposure, or after a screen replacement.
- You can see a crack, lines, or the screen lifting from the frame.
- The issue continues even after a restart, an update and removing all accessories.
If the screen is lifting, stop charging the phone. A swollen battery can push on the display and is a safety concern. Our guide on when to replace your iPhone battery explains the warning signs.
How ghost touch is repaired
In most hardware cases, the fix is a screen replacement with a good-quality display. The quality of the part matters here: a poor replacement screen can bring the same ghost touch right back. Read OEM vs aftermarket iPhone screens explained before you choose.
Less often, the issue is the display connector or a fault on the logic board. A technician can confirm this by testing the phone with a known-good screen before replacing anything permanently.

Quick answers
Can a charger cause iPhone ghost touch?
Yes. Low-quality chargers and cables can create electrical noise that makes the touchscreen act erratically while the phone is plugged in.
Why did ghost touch start after my screen was replaced?
Some lower-quality replacement screens have less reliable touch controllers. A higher-quality display usually solves it.
Will resetting all settings erase my data?
No, it keeps your photos and apps but resets preferences like Wi-Fi passwords. Back up first anyway.
