An iPad that won't charge usually gets noticed at the worst moment: right before a flight, a school day or a work meeting. If your iPad is not charging, charging very slowly, or says "Not Charging" in the corner, don't assume the battery is dead. In many cases the cause is a simple accessory problem or debris in the port.
Here's the checklist we use, starting with the easiest fixes.
Check the adapter and cable first
iPads have bigger batteries than phones and need more power to charge properly. A small phone charger may charge an iPad extremely slowly, or not keep up while you're using it.
- Use a wall adapter designed for tablets or one with a higher wattage rating, ideally the one that came with your iPad.
- Try a different Lightning or USB-C cable, depending on your model. Look for fraying or bent connectors.
- Plug directly into a wall outlet, not a power bar or a computer's USB port. Computers often can't supply enough power, which is why the iPad may show "Not Charging".
- Let it charge for at least 30 minutes before deciding it's not working. A fully drained iPad can take a while before the screen shows anything.
Look inside the charging port
Lint, dust, crumbs and sand collect in iPad ports over time, especially on iPads that travel in backpacks or get used by kids. The debris stops the cable from seating fully.
- Turn the iPad off.
- Shine a flashlight into the port.
- Gently remove debris with a wooden toothpick or plastic tool. Never use metal objects, which can damage the contacts.
- Reconnect the cable. It should click in firmly without wiggling.
If the cable feels loose even after cleaning, or charging only works at an angle, the port may be worn or damaged. Our guide to phone charging problems covers similar symptoms on phones.
Software checks
- Force restart the iPad. On iPads without a Home button, press and release volume up, press and release volume down, then hold the top button until the Apple logo appears. On iPads with a Home button, hold the Home and top buttons together until you see the logo.
- Update iPadOS in Settings > General > Software Update once it has some charge.
- Watch the temperature. iPads may pause charging if they're too hot or too cold. Let it return to room temperature, especially after being in a cold car during an Ottawa winter.
Signs it's a hardware problem
If you've tried a good adapter, a working cable and a clean port, the cause is likely inside the iPad:
- Damaged charging port: loose connection, intermittent charging, or charging that only works in one position.
- Worn battery: it charges, but drains very quickly, shuts down at 20–30%, or the percentage jumps. See our article on whether an iPad battery replacement is worth it.
- Swollen battery: the screen is lifting from the frame. Stop charging, don't press on it, and get it checked promptly.
- Board-level fault: no response to any charger, or it worked until a liquid spill or drop. This may need micro soldering.
Because iPad screens are glued in place, internal repairs require careful removal of the display. That's why we don't recommend opening an iPad at home.

Quick answers
Why does my iPad say Not Charging when plugged into my computer?
Many computer USB ports can't supply enough power for an iPad. Plug it into a wall adapter instead.
Can I use my phone charger for my iPad?
It may work, but often very slowly. A higher-wattage adapter designed for tablets charges an iPad properly.
Can an iPad charging port be repaired?
Yes. A worn or damaged charging port can be repaired; we'll confirm whether it's the port, battery or board during diagnosis.
