Few things are as stressful as plugging in your phone at night and waking up to the same 4% battery. When an Android phone is not charging, the cause is usually one of four things: the cable, the charger, the USB-C port or the battery itself. The good news is that you can rule out most of them at home in about ten minutes, without tools and without spending a cent.
Here's the order we recommend, from the easiest and cheapest check to the ones that need a technician.
Start with the cable and charger
Cables fail far more often than phones. The wires inside break near the connector after months of bending, and cheap cables may not support fast charging at all.
- Try a different USB-C cable you know works with another device.
- Try a different wall adapter, ideally the one that came with your phone or a reputable brand.
- Plug straight into a wall outlet rather than a power bar, laptop or car port.
- If you use a wireless charger, test with a cable too (and vice versa). If one method works and the other doesn't, you've already narrowed it down.
If the phone charges normally with a different cable or adapter, you've found the culprit. Replace it and move on.
Inspect and clean the USB-C port
Pocket lint is the number one reason we see phones that "suddenly" stop charging. Every time you slide your phone into a pocket, a little fluff gets pushed into the port and packed down by the plug. Eventually the cable can't seat fully, so it charges only at a certain angle or not at all.
- Power the phone off.
- Shine a flashlight into the port and look for grey lint or debris.
- Gently loosen it with a wooden toothpick or a plastic tool. Never use a metal pin, paper clip or needle: you can bend or short the tiny contacts.
- Blow out loose debris with a puff of air. Don't spray liquids into the port.
A cable that clicks in firmly afterwards is a good sign. If the plug still feels loose or wobbly, the port itself may be worn or damaged.
Check settings, software and moisture warnings
Sometimes the hardware is fine and the phone is simply choosing not to charge.
- Restart the phone. A frozen charging process is more common than you'd think, and a reboot clears it.
- Battery protection settings. Many Android phones have an option that stops charging before 100% to extend battery life. If your phone always stops at the same percentage, check the battery section of your settings.
- Moisture detected. Some phones, including many Samsung Galaxy models, block wired charging if they sense moisture in the port. Let it dry naturally and use wireless charging meanwhile if you have it. If the warning won't go away on a dry phone, the port may be corroded.
- Safe mode. Booting into safe mode disables third-party apps. If charging works there, an app is interfering.
If you suspect liquid got inside the phone, not just into the port, read our guide on what to do with a water-damaged Android phone before plugging it in again.
When it's the port, the battery or the board
If you've tried a known good cable and charger, cleaned the port and restarted, the problem is most likely hardware. Typical signs:
- Worn or damaged charging port: the cable is loose, charging cuts in and out, or it only works when you hold the cable at an angle. On most Android phones the port is replaceable, often on a small sub-board.
- Worn-out battery: the phone charges, but the percentage jumps around, it dies at 20%, or it shuts off when you open the camera.
- Swollen battery: the screen or back is lifting. Stop charging immediately and don't press on it or try to puncture it.
- Charging circuit fault: a new port doesn't help, or the phone shows charging but the percentage never rises. That's board-level work, explained in our article on charging IC problems.
A proper diagnosis tells you which one it is, so you don't pay for a port when you need a battery.

Quick answers
Why does my Android phone only charge at a certain angle?
Usually lint packed into the USB-C port or a worn port. Cleaning it gently with a wooden toothpick often fixes it; if not, the port needs replacing.
Can a charging port be replaced on a Samsung or Pixel?
Yes. On most Android phones the charging port can be replaced, and it's usually a same-day repair depending on parts availability.
Is it safe to keep charging a phone with a swollen battery?
No. Stop charging it, don't press on it, and have the battery replaced as soon as possible.
