Green or Pink Line on a Samsung Screen: Causes and Your Options

A thin green or pink line down your Samsung Galaxy screen is a common display fault. Here's what causes it, what to try and how it's repaired.

It often starts with a single thin line running from the top of the screen to the bottom. Sometimes it's bright green, sometimes pink or purple, and sometimes it shows up without any drop at all. A Samsung green line on screen is one of the most common display problems we see on Galaxy phones, and it rarely goes away on its own.

Here's what's actually happening, what you can try first, and how to decide what to do next.

What causes the green or pink line?

Galaxy phones use AMOLED displays, where each pixel produces its own light. The pixels are driven by rows and columns of microscopic connections built into the panel. When one of those connections fails, an entire column of pixels gets stuck showing one colour, and you see a vertical line.

Common triggers include:

  • Drops and pressure. An impact can damage the panel even when the glass doesn't crack. Sitting on the phone in a back pocket can do it too.
  • Flex and bending. Slim phones and curved-edge screens are more sensitive to twisting stress.
  • Liquid exposure. Moisture that reaches the display connector can cause lines, flickering or discolouration.
  • Panel ageing. Some lines appear after normal use with no obvious cause, occasionally right after a software update. The update usually isn't the true cause; a weak connection in the panel simply shows up after the restart.

Things to try before booking a repair

These steps take a few minutes. They won't fix physical panel damage, but they help confirm what you're dealing with.

  1. Restart the phone. A rare software glitch can draw a line that disappears after a reboot.
  2. Take a screenshot. If the line doesn't appear in the screenshot, the problem is in the display hardware, not the software.
  3. Boot into safe mode. If the line persists in safe mode, apps aren't the cause.
  4. Update the software. Make sure you're on the latest version, but don't expect an update to repair hardware.
  5. Back up your data now. A single line can turn into several, or into a black screen, with little warning.

Please don't press, tap or squeeze the screen to "fix" the line. That can spread the damage.

Will the line spread?

Sometimes a line stays the same for months. Often, though, it widens, more lines appear, or touch stops working in that area. Because the display and touch layers are fused together on AMOLED phones, a growing fault can eventually make the phone hard to use. If the phone is otherwise in good shape, it's worth acting before it gets worse, especially if you rely on it for work.

Your repair options for a Samsung screen line

A line in an AMOLED panel can't be repaired at the pixel level. The fix is to replace the display assembly. On many Galaxy models the screen comes as a unit with the frame, which keeps the fit tight and the original look intact. Curved-edge screens and foldables take more time and care because of the adhesive and the shape of the glass, which is covered in more detail in our Samsung Galaxy screen repair guide.

When you weigh your options, consider:

  • How old the phone is and whether you're happy with its battery and performance.
  • Whether the line has started to spread or affect touch.
  • Whether the phone has had liquid exposure, since repairs on liquid-damaged devices carry no warranty.

If the repair doesn't make sense for an older phone, you can also sell it to us as a broken device and put the money toward something newer. Our article on whether to repair or replace your phone can help you decide.

Quick answers

Can a software update fix a green line on a Samsung screen?

Almost never. If the line doesn't show up in a screenshot, it's a hardware fault in the display and the panel needs replacing.

Is it safe to keep using a phone with a green line?

Usually yes for a while, but the line may spread or touch may stop working. Back up your data and plan a repair.

Can you repair just the line without replacing the screen?

No. The fault is inside the AMOLED panel, so the fix is a display replacement.
