Should You Repair or Replace Your Phone? How to Decide

Cracked screen, tired battery or both? Use this practical checklist to decide whether to repair your phone or put the money toward a new one.

Repair Guides & Local 3 min read By the Fix Revolution technicians

Your screen is cracked, or your battery barely makes it to dinner, and you're wondering if it's finally time for a new phone. Deciding whether to repair or replace your phone isn't always obvious. A new phone is exciting, but it's also a big expense, and many phones have years of life left after a simple repair.

Here's the practical checklist we walk customers through.

1. How old is the phone, and does it still get updates?

Software support is the single best indicator of how much life a phone has left. Phones that still receive security and system updates are safe to keep using for banking, work and everyday apps. Manufacturers publish how long each model will be supported, and recent phones generally get longer support than older ones.

  • Still getting updates: a repair usually makes sense.
  • Updates ending soon or already ended: think carefully before investing in a big repair, especially if you use it for banking or work.

2. What exactly is wrong with it?

Not all problems are equal. Some repairs restore a phone to like-new condition; others are a sign of bigger trouble.

  • Usually worth repairing: cracked screen, worn battery, loose charging port, cracked back glass, camera glass, speaker or microphone problems. These are routine and most are completed the same day.
  • Depends on the phone: board-level faults, Face ID or fingerprint issues, and phones that won't turn on. These need a proper diagnosis first.
  • Riskier: heavy liquid damage. Results are unpredictable, and repairs on liquid-damaged devices carry no warranty.

If you're torn between screen quality options on an iPhone, our guide to OEM vs aftermarket iPhone screens explains the differences.

3. Compare the repair cost to the phone's value

A simple rule of thumb: get a quote, then compare it to what a similar phone in good condition would cost you, not the price of the newest flagship. If the repair is a modest fraction of that, repairing is usually the smart move. If the quote is close to the value of the phone, upgrading may make more sense.

Remember to factor in the hidden costs of a new phone: cases, screen protectors, setup time, transferring data, and possibly a longer contract.

4. Is everything else in good shape?

Look at the whole phone, not just the broken part. Ask yourself:

  1. Is the storage big enough for your photos and apps?
  2. Is it fast enough for what you do every day?
  3. Is the battery healthy, or will it need replacing soon too?
  4. Does it have several problems at once?

If your phone has one problem and is otherwise fine, repair it. If it's slow, full and failing in several places, that's a strong case to upgrade. Sometimes combining a screen and a battery replacement in one visit gives an older phone a genuine second life.

5. Think about your data and the planet

Keeping your current phone means no data migration, no relearning, and no risk of losing two-factor authentication apps during a switch. It's also better for the environment: making a new phone uses far more resources than replacing a screen or battery. Our article on why repair is better for the planet explains more.

If you upgrade, don't throw the old one away

A broken phone still has value. We buy broken devices, so you can put the money toward your next phone and keep the old one out of the landfill. Before selling or recycling any phone, back it up, sign out of your accounts and erase it if it still turns on.
