Charging IC Problems: When a New Port Doesn't Fix Charging

If a new cable, a clean port and even a new charging port didn't help, the charging chip on the board may be the problem. Here's how to tell.

You tried three cables. You cleaned the port. Maybe you even had the charging port replaced, and the phone still won't charge properly. When that happens, the problem is often a small chip on the main board called the charging IC. Charging IC repair in Ottawa is a board-level job, but it's very often fixable. Here's how to recognise the signs and what's involved.

What the charging IC does

IC stands for integrated circuit — a chip. Phones, tablets and many other devices have one or more chips that manage the power coming in through the charging port. Depending on the device, they:

  • Negotiate with the charger on how much power to accept
  • Control how the battery charges and protect it from overcharging
  • Help the device recognise what's plugged in, including whether an accessory is supported
  • Handle the data connection to a computer on some models

On many older iPhones, the chip that manages the charging port is known as the Tristar or Hydra chip; on Android phones and other devices, the names vary. Either way, it sits between the port and the battery, so if it fails, even a perfect new port can't restore charging.

Signs of a charging IC problem

  • The phone won't charge with any cable or charger, even after a port cleaning or replacement.
  • The charging icon appears, but the percentage doesn't rise or climbs extremely slowly.
  • Charging starts and stops over and over.
  • The battery percentage jumps around or drains very fast (this can also be a worn battery).
  • A computer no longer recognises the phone.
  • The bottom of the phone gets warm when plugged in, or even while idle.
  • An "accessory not supported" message appears with cables that used to work.

Several of these overlap with simpler problems, so always rule out the basics first.

Rule out the easy causes first

  1. Try a known-good, quality cable and wall charger.
  2. Inspect and clean the port with a flashlight and a wooden toothpick; packed-in pocket lint is very common.
  3. Restart the phone and install any software updates.
  4. Check battery health. A worn battery can cause many of the same symptoms.

Our guides on iPhone charging problems and Android phones not charging cover these steps in more detail.

What causes a charging IC to fail

  • Poor-quality chargers and cables that deliver unstable power
  • Power surges, including from faulty car chargers
  • Liquid damage that corrodes the chip or the parts around it
  • Drops that crack solder joints on the board
  • A damaged port that shorted while something was plugged in

How it's repaired

Charging IC replacement is a micro soldering job. The technician first confirms the diagnosis by measuring current and testing the charging circuit. The failed chip is then removed with controlled hot air under a microscope, the pads are cleaned and prepared, and a new chip is soldered in place. Many of these chips connect through tiny solder balls underneath, so precision matters. Finally, the phone is tested with several chargers and, where possible, through a full charge.

This kind of repair doesn't normally require erasing your phone, but always back up before any repair if the phone still works. Damage to the parts around the chip, especially from liquid, can affect what's possible, which is why diagnosis comes first.

Quick answers

Why won't my phone charge after a new charging port?

If the port was replaced and charging still fails, the charging chip on the main board may be damaged. It needs board-level diagnosis and repair.

Can a cheap charger damage my phone's charging IC?

It can. Poor-quality chargers and cables may deliver unstable power, which is a common cause of charging chip failure.

Will I lose data with a charging IC repair?

The repair doesn't normally require erasing the phone, but you should always back up first if possible. We aren't responsible for data loss.
