One gust of wind, one tree you didn't see, one branch the obstacle sensors missed — and your drone is on the ground. After a crash, it's tempting to put in a fresh battery and launch again right away. Don't. A careful inspection can save you from a second, worse crash or a flyaway. Here's what to check, what's usually repairable, and how DJI drone repair in Ottawa works if you need it.
Right after the crash
- Power it down. Turn off the drone and the controller as soon as you reach them.
- Remove the battery and inspect it. If it's swollen, cracked, dented or hot, don't charge it or fly with it. Set it on a non-flammable surface away from anything that can burn, and look into safe battery disposal.
- If it landed in water or snow, remove the battery right away and don't power the drone back on. Dry the outside with a towel, but don't use a hair dryer or heat gun, and skip the rice. Get it to a technician quickly.
- Collect the pieces. Broken propeller fragments, bits of the arm or shell and the gimbal cover all help with diagnosis.
- Note what happened. The flight records in the DJI app can help show what went wrong.
What to inspect
- Propellers: any chip, crack or bend means replacing them. Replace them as a set rather than one at a time.
- Motors: spin each one gently by hand. It should turn smoothly and freely. Grinding, catching or wobbling points to a bent shaft or debris inside.
- Arms and frame: look for cracks, especially at the folding hinges and where the arms meet the body. A loose arm causes vibration in flight.
- Gimbal and camera: check whether the gimbal moves freely when the drone is off and whether the ribbon cable is pinched or torn. Our article on drone gimbal errors goes into more detail.
- Sensors: obstacle-sensing windows should be clean and uncracked.
- Shell and landing gear: cracks can let in moisture or allow internal parts to shift.
Power-on checks (if everything looks okay)
- With the propellers removed, power on the drone and controller and look for warnings in the app, such as gimbal, IMU, compass, vision system or motor errors.
- Run any calibration the app asks for, like an IMU or compass calibration, on a flat surface away from metal and vehicles.
- Check for firmware updates for the drone, controller and app.
- Fit fresh propellers and do a short, low hover in a wide-open area. Watch and listen for drifting, vibration or unusual sounds before flying normally.
If anything feels off, land and stop. A drone that drifts or shakes after a crash is telling you something.
What's usually repairable
Most crash damage can be fixed. Typical drone repairs include:
- Broken arms, frames and shells
- Motor problems and motor-control faults
- Gimbal motors, ribbon cables and camera assemblies
- Damaged vision sensors
- Board-level faults from moisture or a hard impact

Quick answers
Is it safe to fly my drone again after a crash?
Only after inspecting the battery, propellers, motors, arms and gimbal, clearing any app warnings, and doing a short test hover. If anything feels off, get it checked first.
What should I do with a swollen drone battery?
Don't charge it, fly with it or puncture it. Keep it on a non-flammable surface away from anything that can burn and dispose of it safely.
Can a drone that landed in water be repaired?
Sometimes. Remove the battery immediately, don't power it on, and get it to a technician quickly. Repairs on liquid-damaged devices carry no warranty.
