Your drone powers up, but instead of the usual smooth gimbal check, the camera twitches, tilts to one side, or the app shows a gimbal overload warning. Or the footage looks almost right, but with jello, a tilted horizon or a black screen. Gimbal and camera issues are among the most common drone problems, and many have simple causes. Here's how to troubleshoot them and when to look for drone gimbal repair in Ottawa.
How a drone gimbal works
A gimbal holds the camera steady using small brushless motors, usually on three axes: tilt, roll and pan. Sensors detect movement, and the motors counter it in real time. That's what gives you smooth video even while the drone is bouncing around in the wind. Because the motors are constantly adjusting, anything that blocks their movement or damages a cable shows up quickly as an error message or shaky footage.
The most common cause: the gimbal guard
Many DJI drones come with a clear plastic gimbal protector that locks the camera in place during transport. If you power on with it still attached, the gimbal can't complete its startup check, and you'll often get an overload or gimbal error. The fix:
- Power off the drone.
- Remove the gimbal protector carefully.
- Make sure nothing else is touching the camera, such as grass, a sticker or a lens filter that isn't seated properly.
- Place the drone on a flat, level surface and power it on again.
Always remove the guard before powering on, and put it back once the drone is off. It protects the gimbal from bumps in your bag.
Other quick fixes to try
- Level ground: starting up on a slope or an uneven rock can trigger errors.
- Gimbal calibration: in the DJI app's gimbal settings, run the gimbal calibration and leave the drone untouched until it finishes.
- Horizon adjustment: many models let you fine-tune a slightly tilted horizon with a gimbal adjustment setting.
- Firmware: make sure the drone, controller and app are all up to date.
- Filters: heavy or poorly fitting ND filters can unbalance the gimbal, so test without them.
- Cold weather: stiff, cold components and batteries can cause sluggish behaviour. Let the drone warm up before flying in winter.
Signs of hardware damage
If the quick fixes don't help, the problem is probably physical, often after a crash or a hard landing:
- The gimbal droops, hangs loose or sits crooked when powered on.
- One axis doesn't move at all, or it vibrates and buzzes.
- You hear grinding or clicking when the gimbal moves.
- Gimbal or camera errors keep coming back.
- There's no live video, a black screen, or the camera keeps disconnecting.
- Jello or wobble appears in footage even in calm conditions.
Common causes include a torn gimbal ribbon cable, a damaged gimbal motor, broken vibration dampers (the small rubber balls that isolate the camera) or a damaged camera board. The ribbon cables are especially thin and tear easily in a crash. If your drone recently hit the ground, see our checklist for what to check after a DJI crash.
What not to do
- Don't force the gimbal by hand while the drone is powered on.
- Don't keep flying with a persistent gimbal error; a damaged gimbal can get worse, and you risk losing the shot you went out for.
- Don't try to replace gimbal ribbon cables yourself unless you're experienced. The connectors are tiny and break easily.

Quick answers
Why does my drone say gimbal motor overload?
The most common cause is powering on with the gimbal protector still attached or something blocking the camera. If it persists after removing obstructions and calibrating, the gimbal may be damaged.
How do I fix a tilted horizon on my drone?
Run the gimbal calibration in the app on level ground, then use the gimbal adjustment setting if your model has one. If it stays tilted, the gimbal may need repair.
Can a torn gimbal ribbon cable be replaced?
Yes. Gimbal ribbon cables are a common drone repair, but they're delicate, so it's best done by a technician.
