Your aim slowly pulls to one side. Your character inches forward while you're in a menu. In a shooter, the camera won't stay still. That's analog stick drift, and it affects PS5 DualSense and Xbox controllers alike. Before you spend money on a new controller, it's worth understanding what causes drift and how controller stick drift repair works — a practical fix many Ottawa gamers don't realize is an option.
Why controllers drift
Standard DualSense and Xbox Wireless Controllers use analog stick modules with small sensors called potentiometers. Inside each module, contacts slide over resistive tracks as you move the stick, and the controller turns those readings into a position. Over time:
- The tracks and contacts wear down from constant use.
- Dust, crumbs and skin oils work their way inside.
- The centring springs weaken, so the stick doesn't return to the exact middle.
- A drop can crack the module or stress its solder joints.
The result is a controller that reports movement when you aren't touching the stick. It's normal wear rather than a defect in your particular controller, and long competitive sessions speed it up.
How to confirm it's drift
- Test in more than one game. If drift only happens in one title, look for a deadzone setting in that game's controller options. Raising it slightly can hide minor drift.
- Update the controller. PS5 controllers update through the console's settings; Xbox controllers can be updated through the Xbox Accessories app.
- Try a different controller on the same console. If the second one behaves, the problem is in the first controller, not the console.
- Watch the sticks at rest. If the camera or cursor moves with your hands completely off the controller, the stick module is the problem.
Quick fixes that sometimes help
- Compressed air: push the stick to one side and give short bursts around the base, then rotate it. This can clear debris that causes light or intermittent drift.
- Reset the controller: the DualSense has a small reset button on the back that you can press with a straightened paper clip. An Xbox controller can be fully powered off by holding the Xbox button, then turned back on.
Skip the online tricks that involve spraying cleaners into the stick or heating the controller. They often make drift worse and can damage the board.
How controller stick drift repair works
Unlike Joy-Cons, where the stick connects with a ribbon cable, the analog stick modules in standard DualSense and Xbox Wireless Controllers are soldered directly to the controller's circuit board. A proper repair means:
- Opening the controller without breaking its clips.
- Desoldering the worn module. It has several pins, and the pads on the board around them are delicate.
- Fitting a new stick module and soldering it in cleanly.
- Reassembling, then testing the full range of movement and centring.
This is careful soldering work, and it's exactly the kind of job micro soldering skills are built for. Done right, the controller feels like new again. Pro-style controllers such as the DualSense Edge are a bit different: they use replaceable stick modules that you can swap yourself. If you also play on Switch, our guide to Joy-Con drift explains how those controllers compare.
Repair or replace?
A new standard controller uses the same type of stick, so it will eventually wear the same way. If the rest of your controller — buttons, triggers, battery — still works well, replacing the worn stick is often the practical choice, and it keeps another controller out of the trash. To make the new stick last, keep controllers off the floor and away from food, store them somewhere dust-free, and avoid slamming the sticks against their edges.

Quick answers
Can a drifting PS5 controller be fixed?
Yes. The worn analog stick module is desoldered from the controller's board and replaced with a new one, then the controller is tested.
Is stick drift covered by my repair warranty later on?
Our 90-day warranty covers the parts and labour of the repair if it fails. Normal wear from use or accidental damage afterward isn't covered.
Does compressed air fix controller drift?
It can help when debris is the cause, but if the stick module is worn, the drift will come back. Replacing the module is the lasting fix.
