The PlayStation 5 is usually a fairly quiet console, so when yours starts sounding like a jet engine, shuts down in the middle of a game or shows a warning that it is too hot, something is wrong. Most cases of PS5 overheating come down to airflow: where the console sits, how much dust is inside, and whether the fan is working properly. Here is what you can safely check at home and when it is time for a repair.
Signs your PS5 is running too hot
- The fan gets very loud during games, or is loud even on the home screen.
- An on-screen warning says the console is too hot.
- The console shuts off by itself during play.
- The air coming out of the back vents feels unusually hot.
- Games stutter or freeze after you have been playing for a while.
Fix #1: Give it room to breathe
Placement is the most common cause and the easiest to fix. The PS5 draws air in through the front and sides and pushes hot air out the back.
- Get it out of the cabinet. Closed entertainment units trap hot air, and the console ends up breathing its own exhaust. Open shelving is much better.
- Leave space around it. Keep several centimetres of clearance on all sides, and especially at the back.
- Keep it off carpet and away from heaters, other electronics that blow hot air, and direct sunlight.
- Use the stand. Whether vertical or horizontal, use the included stand so the console sits stable and the vents are not blocked.
Fix #2: Clean the dust you can reach
Dust buildup in the intakes and fan is the next most common cause, especially in homes with pets.
- Turn the console completely off (not Rest Mode) and unplug it.
- Vacuum or wipe dust from the outside vents with a soft brush attachment.
- On the original PS5 model, removing the side covers gives access to two dust catcher holes you can vacuum out. Check Sony's support documentation for your specific model before removing covers.
- Use compressed air in short bursts only on the external vents, and do not let the fan spin at high speed from the air.
Avoid going any deeper than that. Inside, the PS5's main chip uses liquid metal as its thermal material rather than standard thermal paste. If it is disturbed or leaks, it can short components on the board. Fully opening the console and dealing with the heatsink is a job for a technician.
Fix #3: Check the software side
- Install the latest system software update, which can include fan and performance improvements.
- Note whether the noise happens in one specific game. Some demanding games naturally push the fan harder.
- Check that the console has space on its storage; a nearly full drive is not a heat problem, but slowdowns sometimes get mistaken for one.
When it is a hardware problem
If you have improved placement and cleaned the vents but the console still overheats, the cause is probably inside:
- Dust packed into the fan and heatsink fins, which needs the console opened to clear.
- A worn or damaged fan, often recognizable by grinding, rattling or clicking.
- A thermal material problem between the chip and heatsink, which can cause sudden shutdowns.
Repeated overheating is hard on the console. Don't ignore shutdowns; they put stress on the board over time. Also, if your PS5 has video problems along with heat issues, read our guide on PS5 HDMI port repair. Owners of older consoles can find similar advice in our article on a loud PS4 fan.

Quick answers
Why is my PS5 so loud?
Usually because of poor airflow from a closed cabinet, dust buildup in the vents and fan, or a worn fan. Some extra noise in very demanding games is normal.
Should I replace the thermal paste on my PS5?
The PS5 uses liquid metal rather than standard thermal paste, and it can short components if mishandled. This work should be done by a technician.
Can overheating damage a PS5?
Repeated overheating and shutdowns put stress on the console's components. It is best to fix the cause as soon as you notice it.
