You insert a game and nothing happens. Or the console says "Unrecognized disc," makes a clicking or grinding noise, or refuses to eject the disc you want to swap out. A PS5 disc drive not reading discs is frustrating, especially when your library is mostly physical games. The good news: some causes are quick to fix at home. Others are mechanical and need a repair.
Start with the disc
Before blaming the console, rule out the disc itself.
- Try another disc. If other games work, the problem is the original disc.
- Inspect the underside. Look for deep scratches, fingerprints, smudges or cracks near the centre hole.
- Clean it properly. Use a soft, lint-free cloth and wipe in straight lines from the centre outward, not in circles. Avoid household cleaners.
- Check the format. The PS5 does not play PS3, PS2 or PS1 discs, and the disc must be a format the console supports.
Software fixes worth trying
- Update the system software. Disc reading and Blu-ray playback rely on the system software; install any pending updates.
- Fully restart. Turn the console off completely rather than using Rest Mode, unplug it for a minute, then start it again.
- Rebuild the database in Safe Mode. With the console off, hold the power button until you hear the second beep. Connect a controller with a USB cable, press the PS button, and choose the option to clear cache and rebuild the database. This does not delete your games or saves, but it can fix recognition problems.
- Check the orientation. If the console stands vertically, make sure it is fully seated in its stand. Try laying it flat horizontally to see if reading improves.
If the Eject button does nothing, you can also try ejecting the disc from the game's options menu on the home screen.
Signs the drive itself has a problem
- All discs fail to read, including ones that work in another console.
- Loud grinding, clicking or repeated whirring when a disc is inserted.
- The drive accepts discs but spits them back out, or will not accept them at all.
- A disc is stuck inside and will not eject from the button or the menu.
- The drive stopped working after the console was moved or dropped.
Common causes include a dirty or failing laser lens, a worn motor or gear, a jammed loading mechanism, or a loose internal cable after a bump. Moving a console while a disc is spinning is a frequent cause of scratched discs and drive damage.
Why you should not force a stuck disc
It is tempting to pry a stuck disc out with a knife or tweezers. Please do not. You can bend the loading mechanism, damage the disc and scratch the laser. Some PS5 models have a manual eject procedure, but it involves removing covers and accessing internal parts, so check Sony's support documentation for your exact model or let a technician handle it. On models with a detachable drive, the connection between the drive and the console can also be the cause, so an inspection is worthwhile.
A disc drive repair may involve cleaning the laser, freeing a jammed mechanism, reconnecting cables, or replacing worn mechanical parts. The drive's electronics are matched to the console on many models, which is another reason a professional repair is usually better than simply swapping in a random used drive.
Other PS5 issues to watch for
Disc drives in a console that runs hot work harder and wear faster. If your PS5 is also loud or getting very warm, see our guide on PS5 overheating and fan noise. And if the console starts but shows no picture, our article on PS5 HDMI port repair covers what to check.

Quick answers
Why won't my PS5 read discs?
It can be a dirty or damaged disc, a software issue, or a mechanical problem with the drive such as a dirty laser or worn parts. Test several discs to narrow it down.
Will rebuilding the database delete my games?
No. Rebuilding the database in Safe Mode reorganizes the system's storage index without deleting games or saved data.
How do I get a stuck disc out of my PS5?
Try ejecting from the game's menu first. If that fails, avoid prying it out; the manual method requires opening covers, so it is best handled by a technician.
