The console powers on, the Xbox logo lights up, maybe you even hear the startup sound, but the TV says "No Signal." An Xbox Series X no signal problem can be anything from a wrong TV setting to a damaged HDMI port. Work through these steps in order; the first few solve a surprising number of cases.
Xbox Series X no signal? Start with the basics
- Confirm the TV input. Make sure the TV is set to the HDMI input the console is connected to.
- Reseat the HDMI cable. Unplug it at both ends and push it back in firmly.
- Use the right port on the console. The Series X has an HDMI out port on the back; make sure the cable is plugged into it.
- Try a different HDMI cable, ideally the one that came with the console or another high-speed cable you know works.
- Connect directly. If you use a receiver, soundbar or HDMI switch, connect the Xbox straight to the TV to test.
- Try a different TV or monitor. This tells you whether the problem follows the console.
Step 2: Reset the display settings
If the console's video settings are not compatible with your TV, for example after switching to a different display, you may get a blank screen. You can boot the console in a low-resolution mode to reset them:
- Make sure the console is fully off. If needed, hold the power button for about 10 seconds.
- Press and hold the power button and the eject button together until you hear two beeps, about 10 seconds.
- The console starts at a low resolution. Go to the display settings and choose a resolution and refresh rate your TV supports.
Also check your TV's settings. Some TVs need enhanced HDMI or a specific input mode for 4K at high refresh rates; check your TV's manual for the exact setting name.
Step 3: Power cycle the console
- Hold the power button for about 10 seconds until the console turns off.
- Unplug the power cable and wait at least 10 seconds.
- Plug it back in and turn the console on.
Signs the HDMI port is damaged
If you still have no picture on any TV with any cable, take a close look at the port with a flashlight:
- Bent, flattened or missing pins inside the port.
- A port shell that is tilted, pushed in or loose.
- A cable that wiggles or does not click in firmly.
- A picture that flickers or cuts out when the cable is touched.
The usual causes are physical: the cable being tripped over, the console moved while still connected, or the plug forced in at an angle. Because the port is soldered to the motherboard, even a sharp tug can crack the solder joints.
In some cases the port looks fine but a component on the board that processes the video signal has failed. Both problems need board-level work.
How an Xbox Series X HDMI port is repaired
The console is opened, the motherboard removed, and the damaged port is carefully desoldered and replaced with a new one. This is precise work done with professional micro soldering equipment under magnification. After the repair, the console is tested on a display to confirm video and audio are working. We advise against attempting this at home, since overheating the board or lifting a pad can make the console much harder to fix.
If your console will not power on at all, rather than powering on with no picture, see our guide for a related model, the Xbox Series S that won't turn on; many of the checks apply to the Series X too.

How do I reset the Xbox Series X display settings?
With the console off, hold the power and eject buttons together until you hear two beeps. It will start in low-resolution mode so you can change settings.
