Nintendo Switch, OLED & Lite Cracked Screen Repair

Original Switch, OLED or Lite: each screen is built differently. Here's what a crack means for your model and what to do before getting it repaired.

Game Consoles 3 min read By the Fix Revolution technicians

Switches live dangerous lives. They get dropped off couches, stepped on, tossed into backpacks and handed to excited kids. A cracked screen is one of the most common results. If you're looking for Nintendo Switch screen repair in Ottawa, the right fix depends on which model you have and which part of the screen is actually damaged. Here's what to know.

Three models, three different screens

  • Nintendo Switch (original): a 6.2-inch LCD with a separate touch layer and front glass. Depending on the damage, sometimes only the glass and touch layer need replacing, and sometimes the LCD as well.
  • Nintendo Switch OLED: a 7-inch OLED panel. Its layers are more closely integrated, so a cracked screen usually means replacing the screen assembly.
  • Nintendo Switch Lite: a 5.5-inch LCD in a handheld-only body with built-in controls. A screen repair involves taking apart more of the console, since the controls share the same shell.

Not sure which one you have? The Lite has no detachable Joy-Cons. The OLED model has a larger screen and a wide kickstand that runs across most of the back.

Cracked glass or a damaged display?

It helps to work out what's actually broken before you ask for a quote:

  • Cracked glass, picture fine: the image looks normal and touch mostly works, but you can see or feel cracks.
  • Touch problems: parts of the screen don't respond, or the Switch registers taps you didn't make.
  • Display damage: black spots, ink-like blotches that spread, coloured lines, flickering, or a completely black screen while the console still makes sounds.

On the original Switch, a crack that only affects the glass and touch layer is often a less involved repair than one that has also damaged the LCD underneath. On the OLED and Lite, the screen is usually replaced as a unit. Tell us what you're seeing when you request a quote and we'll explain your options.

A note about the Switch OLED's screen film

The Switch OLED comes with an adhesive anti-scatter film applied to the screen at the factory. It's designed to keep glass fragments from scattering if the screen breaks. It isn't a regular screen protector, so don't peel it off, even if it gets scratched. You can apply a screen protector on top of it.

What to do right after a crack

  1. Protect your fingers. If glass is splintering, stop using touch controls and cover the screen with clear packing tape to hold shards in place.
  2. Don't press on the damaged area. Black blotches on an LCD or OLED often spread with pressure.
  3. Be gentle with the dock. If the frame is bent, forcing the console into the dock can scratch it further or strain the USB-C connector.
  4. Back up your saves. With a Nintendo Switch Online membership, most games support cloud saves. Check that recent progress has synced before handing over the console.

Prevent the next crack

A tempered glass screen protector and a hard-shell carrying case go a long way. A grip case also helps younger players hold the console securely, and keeping it in a case rather than loose in a bag prevents most pressure cracks. Many of the same principles apply to phones, and our guide on what actually protects your screen covers them in detail.

And if the Joy-Cons have started moving on their own, read our article on Joy-Con drift — it's easy to have both problems looked at during the same visit.

Quick answers

Can you replace just the glass on a Nintendo Switch?

On the original Switch, the touch glass and LCD are separate, so if only the glass is damaged it can often be replaced on its own. The OLED and Lite screens are usually replaced as a unit.

Should I remove the film on my Switch OLED screen?

No. It's a factory anti-scatter film, not a screen protector. Leave it on and put a screen protector on top if you want extra protection.

Will I lose my game saves during a screen repair?

A screen repair doesn't normally affect your saves, but always back them up first. Cloud saves through Nintendo Switch Online are the easiest option.
