Face ID Not Working on Your iPhone? Causes and Fixes

From a dirty sensor to a damaged TrueDepth camera, here is how to troubleshoot Face ID and what to do when the phone says Face ID is not available.

Face ID is so convenient that you only notice it when it stops working. Suddenly you are typing your passcode twenty times a day, Apple Pay asks for a code, and apps no longer unlock automatically. If you are dealing with Face ID not working, the cause can be anything from a smudge on the sensor to damage inside the phone. Start with the simple checks below before assuming the worst.

Face ID not working? Quick fixes to try first

  1. Clean the top of the screen. The TrueDepth camera sits in the notch or Dynamic Island area. Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth.
  2. Check your screen protector and case. A protector with a misaligned cut-out, bubbles or a privacy filter over the sensors can block Face ID. Some cases also cover the top edge.
  3. Hold the phone at a normal distance, roughly an arm's length or closer, facing you.
  4. Check orientation. Some older Face ID models only work in portrait orientation.
  5. Restart your iPhone. A restart clears many temporary glitches.
  6. Update iOS in Settings > General > Software Update.
  7. Review Face ID settings in Settings > Face ID & Passcode. Make sure the features you want, like iPhone Unlock, are turned on.
  8. Set up an Alternate Appearance if you often wear glasses or look quite different at times, or use Face ID with a Mask on supported models.
  9. Reset Face ID and set it up again in good lighting.

If Face ID works again after these steps, the problem was software or something blocking the sensors.

Signs of a hardware problem

When nothing above helps, these clues point to hardware:

  • A message such as "Face ID is not available" or "Unable to activate Face ID on this iPhone".
  • The setup screen never recognises your face, or the camera view does not appear.
  • Face ID stopped working right after a drop or after the phone got wet.
  • Face ID failed after a previous screen or battery repair.
  • The front camera also has problems, or the screen does not dim during calls (a sign the proximity sensor may be affected).

What causes Face ID hardware failure

Face ID relies on the TrueDepth camera system, which includes an infrared camera, a flood illuminator and a dot projector that maps your face. Common causes of failure are:

  • Drops and impacts that damage the delicate dot projector or its flex cable.
  • Liquid damage that corrodes components or connectors. If your phone recently got wet, see what to do if your iPhone got wet.
  • Careless repairs. The Face ID components sit right next to parts that get moved during a screen replacement. Rough handling, heat or a torn flex cable can disable Face ID.
  • Logic board issues affecting the connection to the TrueDepth system.

Can Face ID be repaired?

Often, yes, but it depends on what failed. The Face ID components are paired to your iPhone's logic board for security, so simply swapping in a part from another phone generally does not work. That makes an accurate diagnosis especially important. Depending on the cause, a fix may involve repairing a damaged flex cable, cleaning corrosion, correcting a problem left by a previous repair, or board-level work. A good technician will tell you honestly what is repairable on your specific phone before any work starts. Not every Face ID fault can be fixed, and you deserve to know that up front.

Protect Face ID during other repairs

If your iPhone needs a screen replacement, ask the shop how they handle the Face ID components. An experienced technician tests Face ID before and after the repair so you know it works when the phone comes back.

Quick answers

Why did Face ID stop working after a screen replacement?

The Face ID parts sit next to components moved during a screen repair. A damaged flex cable or rough handling can disable it, so it should be tested before and after.

Can any Face ID part be swapped in from another iPhone?

Generally no. Face ID components are paired to the original logic board for security, so diagnosis and repair of the original parts matters.

Can a screen protector stop Face ID from working?

Yes. A protector with a misaligned cut-out, bubbles or a privacy layer over the sensors can block Face ID.
