Since the iPhone 8, most iPhones have a glass back. It looks great and it makes wireless charging possible, but it also means a drop onto concrete can crack the phone on both sides. Many people keep using a phone with a shattered back for months because "the screen still works". Before you decide to live with it, here is what a cracked back actually means for your phone and what your options are for iPhone back glass repair in Ottawa.
Is a cracked iPhone back just cosmetic?
Sometimes it starts that way, but it rarely stays harmless. The main risks are:
- Cuts. Back glass fractures into small, sharp shards. Fingers, pockets and the inside of bags take a beating, and splinters can work loose over time.
- Moisture and dust. Once the glass is broken, the phone's water resistance can no longer be relied on. Rain, snow, sweat and spills have an easier way in.
- Spreading cracks. Every new bump can extend the damage. Cracks often travel toward the camera area, where they can reach the lens covers.
- Camera problems. Broken glass around the cameras can let debris onto the lenses or cause blurry, hazy photos. See iPhone camera blurry, shaking or black for related symptoms.
- Wireless charging issues. Damage near the charging coil area can make wireless or MagSafe charging unreliable.
- Lower resale value. A cracked back noticeably reduces what a phone is worth when you sell or trade it in.
Check for damage beyond the glass
A hard fall that cracks the back can also affect other parts. Look for:
- A bent frame, especially at the corners.
- Cracked camera lens covers (the small glass circles over each lens).
- Problems with the flash, the rear microphone or wireless charging.
- A screen that has started to lift. That can be impact damage, but it can also be a swollen battery. If you notice a gap, stop charging the phone and have it inspected.

Your repair options
How back glass is repaired depends largely on the model.
Back glass replacement
On many models, the glass is bonded firmly to the metal frame. A professional shop removes the broken glass with specialised equipment, cleans the frame, and fits a new back panel. Your phone keeps its original frame and internal parts. Some newer iPhone models were redesigned so that the back glass can be replaced more easily, which can simplify the repair.
Housing replacement
If the frame is bent or badly damaged, a full housing replacement may make more sense. All internal components are moved into a new frame that comes with fresh back glass. It is more involved, but the result is like a new shell.
Living with it (temporarily)
If you need a few days before the repair, put the phone in a full case to contain the shards, and avoid wireless charging if the cracks are near the centre. Do not try to remove the glass yourself with heat or tools; it is easy to damage the battery or internal cables.
How to avoid it next time
A case with raised edges and corner protection does far more for back glass than any screen protector. Our article on screen protectors and cases that actually protect your phone covers what to look for.

Quick answers
Can I keep using an iPhone with cracked back glass?
You can for a short time, but the shards can cut you and the phone is no longer reliably water resistant. Use a full case until it is repaired.
Does a cracked back affect wireless charging?
It can, especially if the damage is near the centre of the back where the charging coil sits.
Will replacing the back glass affect my data?
It should not, but we always recommend backing up your iPhone before any repair.
